Dr. Guy Goodwin
CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICERDr. Guy Goodwin, Chief Medical Officer of Compass Pathways, came to psychiatry by way of neuroscience, motivated to dive into one of the field’s biggest unknowns: the intersection of brain, mind, and human experience. His research has focused on the treatment of mood disorders and, increasingly, the potential to improve outcomes with new technology and therapeutic modalities, including psychedelics. Guy played an essential role in developing the Compass Phase IIb clinical trial and acted as its coordinating principal investigator. His clinical and research endeavors have always run in sync, with patient experience a central component of the science.
Guy completed his medical degree and DPhil in physiology at the University of Oxford. He spent a decade as a Clinical Scientist at the MRC Brain Metabolism Unit in Edinburgh before returning to Oxford as head of the department of psychiatry and a senior research fellow. Guy is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and previously served as President of both the British Association for Psychopharmacology and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), as well as Senior Investigator at the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). He is an extensively published scholar with contributions across multiple peer-reviewed journals, bringing deep research and academia expertise into his clinical practice. Guy previously served as Co-Chair of the pro bono national commission for the Bipolar UK charity.
At Compass, Guy ensures that the scientific approach to this new class of treatment is one the medical community can embrace with confidence. He is committed to the rigorous, transparent standards of clinical evidence that clinicians expect, and people living with serious mental health conditions deserve, positioning Compass to build a clinical record that advances the field in ways that matter.
To Guy, the magic lives in patients returning to their lives, experiencing a restored, or perhaps entirely new sense of peace in the ordinary things they had been missing, like thriving at work, closeness in relationships - the flow of a normal day.
There’s something magical about witnessing recovery from depression – to see a person return to normal life. Our team at Compass has the opportunity to enable more of that magic.
