Dr. Michael Gold
CHIEF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICERDr. Michael Gold, Chief Research and Development Officer of Compass Pathways, describes clinical research as his natural element. He brings to his role a commitment to three interlocking priorities: generating high-quality, scientifically rigorous data that regulators, payers, and patients can genuinely trust; maintaining transparency about what the evidence shows; and getting treatments to patients by breaking down barriers between approval and access. Michael’s work at Compass is guided by a deep-rooted commitment to his ethical duties as a physician to always act in the best interest of the patient, which has solidified his vision of what patient-centered drug development must be in practice.
Michael has spent thirty years in biopharmaceuticals developing his clinical expertise into one of the most experienced development careers in the industry. He brings a wealth of enterprise-wide experience that spans all stages of development, as well as a range of geographical scales and clinical platforms from global organizations to biotechs, including AbbVie, Neumora, Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithKline. Michael is a well-published author, accredited on 70 publications, and a highly respected leader in neuroscience drug development, sitting on multiple advisory boards and having served as the industry representative for advisory committees of the FDA’s Office of Neuroscience. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Miami, and an M.D. from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a post-graduate fellowship in Behavioral Neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
The work at Compass is imbued with both personal weight and professional purpose for Michael, shaping both how he leads and how he envisions clinical strategy and brings them to life. What he finds particularly rewarding about Compass is being part of a team united not only by excellence, but by a clear, shared understanding of whom we are here to serve.
Rigorous clinical research is essential to fulfilling my oath as a physician. Compass presented an opportunity to honor this in service of something deeper: important work for patients who desperately need better options.
