Dr. Steve Levine
CHIEF PATIENT OFFICERDr. Steve Levine, Chief Patient Officer of Compass Pathways, is a board-certified psychiatrist who has spent more than two decades treating thousands of patients with the most difficult-to-treat conditions, working across the spectrum of healthcare to challenge the status quo on behalf of patients. He leads with an innate compassion for others and approaches his work through the lens of securing broad access to innovation. Having watched people closest to him navigate their own mental health journeys, every decision he makes starts with a simple question: what would he want for someone he loves?
At Compass, Steve leads the work of enabling broad and equitable access to Compass’ psychedelic treatment. He believes that no two patients are the same, and that the future of mental health care lies in integrated ecosystems where treatment and medication are no longer bifurcated. He envisions a world where psychiatric care is demystified, one where patients, clinicians, and innovators link arms and, together, march toward something better.
Steve joined Compass from a career that was already redefining what psychiatric care could look like. In 2010, he founded, Actify Neurotherapies, the first ketamine and interventional psychiatry clinics in the United States. Steve completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, followed by fellowship subspecialty training in psychosomatic medicine and psycho-oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He holds a B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University, and earned his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine. Steve has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and popular media and has presented to both professional and lay audiences around the world.
Steve found himself not only drawn to Compass’ mission, but to the people bringing it to life. In a career spent among brilliant minds, he has rarely encountered a team where deep expertise and genuine human decency are equally non-negotiable. At Compass, that combination is not a culture benefit: it’s the whole point.
Every decision I make is linked to what I would want for someone I love. Our mission is both selfless and selfish—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
